What

A progress report on the digitization of the Czech Government by Deputy Prime Minister for Digitization and Minister for Regional Development of the Czech Republic PhDr. Ivan Bartoš, Ph.D. and a discussion of digitization priorities between Mr. Bartoš and industry leaders. A follow-up on the conferences in 2022 and 2023.

Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Bartoš is the first parliamentary party chair to insist that the government take digitization seriously enough to assign it a minister. He then accepted the role of being that minister. Restructuring how IT was procured, structured and stretched across ministries and down into muncipalities was not going to be an easy task. Achieving digitization would require making systems work across multiple IT departments with different hardware and separate budgets. It would require having teams of software architecture experts sophisticated enough to code new programs or shape precise procurement bids. Bartos has made a start by creating a central Digital Information Agency, which is meant to make systems compatible across ministries and agencies. That agency introduced e-doklady, a basic building block for handling citizen requests and data throughout the vast forest of government IT systems. At the same time, his ministry has been tasked with formulating the Czech response to EU initiatives aimed at regulating the flow of new technology and creating the concept of European digital sovereignty.

How satisfied is he with progress to date? What direction does he think Europe’s digital policy should go and will go? What would he like to accomplish before this government heads to elections?

After the keynote and Q&A, the industry panel with Renate Strazdina of Microsoft, Michal Pěchouček of Gen Digital, Antonín Hlavinka of Olomouc Faculty Hospital, Center for Digital Health, and Jiří Sven Svěrák of Amazon Web Services will address the current issues in digitizing Czechia.
